Wether it’s a name like Si\u00e2n or a word like r\u00e9sum\u00e9 there are many occassions when we need to add an accent or a foreign character. Of course, we could use Insert|Symbol but it gets a bit tedious if you need to add an accent or foreign character frequently.<\/p>\n

There is a quicker, easier way using the keyboard as follows:<\/p>\n

NB the “+” denotes hold down keys together not press the plus\/equals key<\/p>\n

Acute accent such as \u00e9 or \u00e1 – ctrl + ‘ (apostrophe) then the letter.
\nGrave accent such as \u00e8 or \u00f9 – ctrl + ` (the key to the left of 1) then the letter.
\nCircumflex such as \u00e2 – ctrl+shift+^ then the letter.
\nCedilla as in gar\u00e7on – ctrl+, then the letter
\nUmlaut such as \u00fc – ctrl+shift+; (semi-colon) then the letter
\nTilde such as \u00f1 – ctrl+shift+~ then the letter
\nThis may seem like a daunting list but, like most keyboard shortcuts, those who need to use them frequently will soon use them almost unconsciously.\n<\/p>\n
